Update April 2009 from the George Washington Forest Service:
Proposal from FreedomWorks to Install Meteological Towers on George Washington National Forest Denied.
In early December 2008, FreedomWorks, LLC submitted a proposal to install 3 meteological towers. These towers could collect wind and other meteological data necessary to support the installation of future wind turbines.
On April 2, 2009, Maureen Hyzer, Forest Supervisor for the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, denied acceptance of FreedomWorks' proposal. The denial was based on two factors. The first factor was their intentions of constructing 131 wind turbines don not comply with the Revised George Washington National Forest Management Plan. The second factor is they did not provide sufficient rationale for why the use of national forest system land is necessary.
They've been advised that if they wish to submit a proposal, that proposal must comply with the Forest Plan and contan sufficient rationale as to why National Forest Lands must be utilized. It is important to note, this decision does not preclude future wind proposals from being considered by us or the possibility that wind turbines may someday be permitted on National Forests' in VIrginia or West Virginia.

On Tuesday, June 17, 2008, more than 200 residents crowded into the auditorium at Peter Muhlenberg Middle School in Woodstock to discuss the concept of industrial wind energy on the Shenandoah Valley's ridgelines. Clearly this is an issue that has captured the interest of this community.
Shenandoah Forum will continue to post materials and additional information on this topic. We hope this public discussion will continue throughout the next months and years as our region ponders this concept.
